Coal, trona, and oil

Powder River Basin coal itself leaves by unit train, but keeping those mines running takes constant truck freight: equipment, tires the size of a car, pipe, and supplies. The Green River Basin produces more soda ash than anywhere else in the country. Oil and gas around Casper and Gillette add their own flatbed and oilfield work. Wind development brings oversize turbine components.

I-80 in winter

I-80 runs 402 miles across southern Wyoming and carries heavy transcontinental truck traffic. It also closes. Blowing snow shuts that road regularly through the winter, and any driver who runs it learns to watch the WYDOT alerts rather than the sky. This is not an occasional inconvenience, it is a feature of the job here.

What Wyoming is not

There are no ports and very little consumer distribution freight, because there are very few people. If you want dry van DC work, this is the wrong state. If you want to pull a flatbed or run heavy haul in serious country, few places offer more of it.

Finding driving work in Wyoming

This is a state for drivers who want heavy freight and do not mind hard conditions. Mine resupply around Gillette, oilfield work near Casper, and soda ash out of the Green River Basin all hire, and all of it is flatbed or heavy haul.

Ask about winter policy before anything else. I-80 closes regularly, and a carrier that pressures drivers to run when WYDOT says otherwise is telling you exactly what kind of company it is.
