Wheat, oil, and timber

The Golden Triangle between Great Falls, Havre, and Cut Bank is the state's wheat country, and grain moves seasonally toward Pacific Northwest export terminals. Eastern Montana catches the edge of Bakken oilfield activity, which means flatbed and oilfield equipment. Billings refines crude. Western Montana cuts timber. Each corner of the state does something different.

The Canadian crossing

Sweetgrass and Coutts on I-15 is Montana's busiest port of entry and the only 24 hour commercial crossing into Alberta. If you want cross border work out of the northern Rockies, that is where it happens.

Be honest about the distances

I-90 crosses the state east to west, I-94 branches northeast, and I-15 runs north to Canada. Between them is a lot of open country with few services. Deadhead legs are long here because the population is thin, and winter is not a metaphor. Drivers who want scenery and solitude find it. Drivers who want dense freight and short runs should look elsewhere.

Be realistic about what you want. Montana pays for flatbed, bulk, and oilfield skill, and it offers country most drivers never see. It does not offer dense freight, short runs, or easy winters.
