Coal, chemicals, and timber

West Virginia is the second largest coal producing state, and a good deal of it is Appalachian metallurgical coal used in steelmaking rather than power generation. Around Charleston and South Charleston, the Kanawha Valley has earned the name Chemical Valley for a reason, and that industry moves hazmat by tanker. Hardwood timber and natural gas fill out the freight base.

The terrain is the job

This is the most mountainous state in the East, and no landing page should pretend otherwise. Grades, switchbacks, and weather are part of the work. I-64, I-77, I-79, and I-68 carry the state, and each has stretches that ask something of a driver. If you are new, that is worth knowing. If you are experienced, it is often the appeal.

The Eastern Panhandle exception

Martinsburg and the Eastern Panhandle work nothing like the rest of the state. They sit on I-81 inside the Washington DC distribution corridor, which means warehouse and dry van freight rather than coal and chemicals. Rivers matter too: Ohio and Kanawha barge terminals do work that a seaport would do elsewhere.

Finding driving work in West Virginia

This is a state for drivers who genuinely like difficult driving. Coal, chemicals, and timber all hire, and all of it moves through mountains. If grades and switchbacks appeal to you, few places offer more.

The Eastern Panhandle around Martinsburg is the exception and works like a normal distribution market. If you want warehouse freight and I-81 lanes rather than mountain hauling, that is where to look. Hazmat pays well in the Kanawha Valley.
