Laredo and the I-35 corridor

Laredo is the number one land port in the United States, and roughly half of all US trade with Mexico crosses there. I-35 carries it north through San Antonio, Austin, and into Dallas Fort Worth, which makes it the primary cross border truck corridor on the continent. If you want steady dry van miles with constant volume, this is the lane.

Oil in the west, chemicals on the coast

The Permian Basin produces about a third of all US crude, and oilfield trucking out there is its own distinct trade: hotshot runs, frac sand, pipe, rig moves, and water. It pays well and it asks a lot. Down on the Gulf Coast, the Houston Ship Channel anchors the largest petrochemical complex in the country, which is tanker country and where hazmat endorsements start paying for themselves.

The distances are real

I-10 runs more than 880 miles across Texas, the longest stretch in any state. El Paso to Beaumont is farther than New York to Chicago. Drivers new to Texas routinely underestimate this. I-45 links Houston and Dallas, I-20 crosses the north, and DFW sits on top of one of the largest inland distribution and intermodal complexes in the country.

Finding driving work in Texas

No state hires more drivers, and no state offers more different kinds of work. Pick the market before you pick the carrier. Laredo and I-35 mean cross border dry van. Houston means tanker and chemicals. West Texas means oilfield. DFW means distribution.

Oilfield pay looks enormous on paper and comes with long hours and rough roads. Cross border work involves waiting. Ask what a typical week actually looks like rather than what the top earners make, and get the answer before you sign.
