Northwest Arkansas

The Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville corridor punches far above its weight. Walmart's headquarters pulls an enormous supplier presence into a small metro, which concentrates retail freight in a way no other market of this size experiences. J.B. Hunt is headquartered a few miles away. If you want to understand American retail logistics, it is all happening in one valley.

Poultry and steel

Poultry is the state's largest agricultural commodity by a wide margin, and Tyson is headquartered in Springdale. That is refrigerated freight moving constantly. Over in Mississippi County, Big River Steel and US Steel operations put serious flatbed work on the road hauling coil and plate. Timber and rice fill in the rest.

The I-40 and I-30 junction

Little Rock sits where I-40 and I-30 meet, which makes it a natural staging point between Memphis, Dallas, and Oklahoma. I-49 runs up to the northwest corner. The Arkansas River carries barge traffic on the McClellan Kerr system, and the Port of Little Rock works with it.

Finding driving work in Arkansas

The concentration of major carriers headquartered here is a genuine advantage for a driver. When several large employers compete for people in one region, drivers gain leverage they do not have in a one carrier town.

Northwest Arkansas is retail freight, Springdale is poultry and reefer, and Mississippi County is steel and flatbed. Little Rock sits at the crossroads and offers the widest mix. Different jobs, all within a few hours of each other.
