The largest inland port in America

BNSF's Logistics Park Chicago and Union Pacific's Joliet Intermodal Terminal together form the biggest inland port complex in the country, out along I-80 southwest of the city. Containers come off trains and onto trucks by the thousands. Drayage work here is constant, and the warehouse development around it has been enormous.

All six Class I railroads meeting in one place is a genuine anomaly. It is why Chicago is the center of American freight and why so much of it touches a truck here.

Beyond Chicago

Downstate Illinois is a different economy: corn, soybeans, and Caterpillar in Peoria building machinery that moves on flatbeds. Rockford adds manufacturing and aerospace. Food processing runs throughout. It is easy to forget the state is mostly farmland when the metro dominates the conversation.

The corridors and the tolls

I-80, I-90, and I-94 all pass through the Chicago area, and I-55 and I-57 run south. Much of the metro network is tolled, and traffic is a real factor in planning. O'Hare handles serious air cargo on top of everything else.

Finding driving work in Illinois

Chicago drayage is the single biggest employer and the work is constant, though the traffic and the tolls are real. The intermodal yards out along I-80 near Joliet are where much of the hiring happens.

Downstate is a different search: Caterpillar flatbed work in Peoria, ag freight, and food processing. If Chicago traffic is not for you, those markets hire too and the pace is entirely different.

Chicago is the largest freight hub in North America, so Illinois carriers show up constantly among CDL jobs hiring now. Chicago's food service and beverage routes add a deep bench of Class B CDL jobs alongside the tractor trailer work.
