The border crossing

The Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit Windsor Tunnel, and now the Gordie Howe International Bridge carry more truck freight between the US and Canada than any other crossing. A huge share of it is auto parts moving back and forth, sometimes several times, as components become assemblies. Cross border work is a normal part of driving here.

Just in time is not a slogan here

Ford in Dearborn, GM in Detroit and Warren, and Stellantis in Auburn Hills sit at the center of a Tier 1 supplier network spread along I-75 and I-94. Plants schedule parts to arrive in windows measured in minutes, not days. That is why so much Michigan freight is time critical and why reliability matters more than raw mileage.

The other side of the state

West Michigan works differently. Grand Rapids builds office furniture and runs air cargo. The fruit belt along Lake Michigan grows cherries and apples, which move in reefers. Midland does chemicals. I-96 and I-69 tie it all back to Detroit.

Finding driving work in Michigan

Auto freight is the market, and it runs on a clock. If you are reliable and comfortable with tight delivery windows, the supplier network along I-75 and I-94 will keep you working. Cross border runs to Canada are common and require the paperwork discipline that comes with them.

West Michigan around Grand Rapids is a genuinely different market with furniture, fruit, and air cargo. If Detroit is not what you want, that side of the state hires too.

Auto plants run on just in time freight, and dedicated trucking jobs serving them are Michigan's signature seats. Metro Detroit's supplier and delivery networks keep Class B CDL jobs moving alongside the auto freight.
